Tied to the mast
…but orange now and black

Well, Hilary Bok—better known as Hilzoy of the Obsidian Wings group blog—will soon be logging what she says will be her last blog post (though she promises to stay engaged with comments). She attributes her decision to a sense that the reason she began blogging—as she puts it, that, “in 2002, I thought that my country had gone insane”—has faded.

Whether America (or the world) is actually more sane than it was in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 I think is an open question, but the endless adventure in Iraq and the economic crisis has certainly made it more sober.

It’s a bummer and a loss, not only for Obsidian Wings, but for the many various debates in which she was a strong voice of and for civility and reason. I hope she continues her engagement in these debates, if not by blogging, then through other media.

Best wishes to her, and may she see her Bare-Faced Go-Away Bird on her trip to Rwanda next week.
